Starting about 1840 bananas were grown for export on the Canary Islands. Dwarf Cavendish - 2m to 3m high - was prefered because of the windy situation. Standard banana plants may grow up to 8m! A bunch of Dwarf Cavendish may weigh 40 kg compared to 50 kg ore more of American bananas. The peel is tender and the bracts have to be removed by hand to prevent rotting. But the taste is much sweeter!!! |
Um 1840 begann der Anbau von Bananen für den Export auf den Kanarischen Inseln. Während die üblichen Bananenstauden bis 8m hoch werden, wählte man hier Dwarf Cavendish (2-3m) wegen der Winde. Der Fruchtstand von Dwarf Cavendish kann 40 kg wiegen (50 kg oder mehr übliche Bananen). Die Schale ist empfindlicher und die Blütenreste müssen per Hand geputzt werden, um ein Faulen zu verhindern. Aber der Geschmack ist süsser!!! |
| Above you see a flower of a banana. Without pollination from the first female part the fruits are growing. Later there are bisexual and male flowers yielding no fruits, thus cut away. There are normally no seeds in a banana. For reproduction only succers like onion bulbs are used ore tissue culture commercially. |
