The shields bring external decorations, until a score of different types according to the degree and type of nobility that it is. To some we have granted them an own page, like it is the case of the helmets or helmets, crowns, caps, and even another for the ecclesiastical heraldry; of the remaining ornaments we will indicate some notions of those most used ones or the most excellent; and for we can help ourselves of the figures inserted below.
TENANTES. They are angelic or human figures that placed behind or to the sides of the shield, they are good to sustain him. (Example in the figure nş 11).
SUPPORT. They are figures of real animals or quiméricos that placed behind or to the sides of the shield, they hold this with their claws. (Examples in the figures nş 2, 7 and 8).
CIMERAS. They are natural, artificial figures or quiméricas that are placed in the superior part of the helmet or crown, they usually belong together with figures that it contains the shield, and they were adopted to be identified in the combat or to infuse terror to the enemies. (Cimeras examples in the figures nş 3, 4, 6 and 7).
LAMBREQUINES. They are decorations with form of acanthus leaves that leaving of the helmet, they fall to both sides of the shield. Its form of drawing them is the artist's freedom, but respecting the colors of the shield that will should of at least a metal and an enamel. They have their origin in the mantel that the noblemen used to cover their armor of the sun and the rain; and that when bringing it with breaks of the sword blows in the combat, it was granted their use as badge to such a merit. You generalized their use to adorn the shields, for those who were not entitled to mantel, supports or tenantes. (Examples in the figures nş 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16).
MANTELS. It is a layer of scarlet velvet, lined of ermines in their internal part, and collection to both sides in their superior part. It is a decoration of high dignities. (Example of Mantel of Big of Spain in the figures nş 1 at 8 ).
MOTTO. The Motto, Sights, or Scream of War", it is sometimes a sentence enigmatic that is usually placed on the cimera or in the inferior part of the shield. (Examples in the figures nş 4, 6, 7 and 9).
