Toledo

Toledo is an old city, as old as you can imagine. If I would be a tourist in Toledo, I’ve been because I love the old city, the parts that I would not leave with see them are the Cathedral, probably the most beautiful of Spain, the Cobertizos de Santa Clara and the view from the Valle. Of course there are a lot more to see but that the principal.

Day 1

A good route for Toledo start at the Puerta de Bisagra, first stop visit the iglesia of Santiago del Arrabal. Going up from that street we get to the Miradero (viewer) where to rest and see the view. Then we can keep going to Plaza de Zocodover, there to the right is going a little down is the Museo de Santa Cruz, together with the Cathedral the only one worth to see. After Museo de Santa Cruz we go the Zocodover and take the Calle del Comercio (or calle ancha like Toledo people called it) until we get to the plaza del Ayuntamiento where the Cathedral is. After spending some time in the Cathedral the best is to take the Nuncio viejo street to Santo Domingo el Real convent if visit are allow a that time a visit is obligatory. Then we’ll go to the cobertizos the Santa Clara, street where no people is found and the air makes strange noise that are almost scare. From there we’ll go to calle de la Silleria to Cristo de la Luz where we will stop at the Mezquita. We going down to the Puerta de Alfonso VI, here we are very close going up where we started.

Day 2

Starting a the Cathedal we take the Trinidad street to Santo Tome, here some shopping. Then going down we take the Angel street to San Juan de los Reyes from there the is a nice view, a little down further is the puerta del Canbron before to leave for that door we the street that goes down to the river until get to San Martin bridge, after spending some time there we go back for the same street that we took before, until get to San Juan de los Reyes in the Transito street we will stop at the Santa Maria la Blanca Sinagoga and from there to Sinagoga del Transito. The Sinagoga del Transito was the biggest in Europe at the time. The is the Casa del Greco very close, but do not bother if you do not have a lot of time. The way to the Valle view can be done by walk all the way down from the museum the Santa Cruz to Alcantara bridge (at the top is the San Servando Castle and from there just follow the river walk. Also, there is a mini tourist “train” that leave from Zocodover square or just take a taxi.
There are more to see, but that is for people with time and willing to get lost and find it for themselves, just look to the patios.

How to Get

Coming from Madrid there are buses every half hour, leaving from the south station (estacion sur). Also there are trains leaving from the Atocha station that are pretty comfortable.

Where to Stay

There are a lot o good hotels starting from the Parador **** to nice hostales such a Nuevo Labrador very economic with TV and bathroom.

Where to Eat

There are a lot of restaurants all over the rotes that we just discuses, most of then have good prices and decent service. But, it you do not want to try Spanish food there is a McDonalds at the Zocodover square.

Shopping

The best to buy in Toledo are Damasquino (gold work) and ceramic. There are a lot of store all over, but be careful and do not buy a the first place, the prices can be very different from one store to another. Also, the marzipan is very typical souvenir from Toledo. Spain is a good place to buy leather and in Toledo you will find good stores.

The weather

The best time to visit Toledo is probably in May or June when the temperature are around 80s. The winter in Toledo is very cold during the mount of January less cold during February and soft during March. July and August are very hot and many day the temperature get to 100s. Fall and spring are one day of summer and the next of winter, thought I would say that Fall is better.
