Madrid

Is the capital of Spain and largest city with a population of more than 3 million inhabitants, it is known for its exciting nightlife, many historic sites and monuments, and scores of world-acclaimed museums. Madrid is the highest capital of Europe, located on a central plateau (meseta) 2,120 feet above sea level. Because of this high altitude and central location, Madrid has warm dry summers and cool winters. There are two thing that you must see in your visit to Madrid; the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace, but of course this just two there are more....

+ Madrid map

Day one

Since I said that Prado museum is something that you must see let start there. The Prado museo is the Prado avenue and it is one of the best art collection of the world, centantly the best in the Spanish painters. You can spent the morning in the museum and after that follow the Prado avenue to the Colon Square and have lunch there. The Madrid's Hard Rock Cafe is in the corner with Paseo de la Castillana, just in case you want ameriacan food o don't want to try your Spanish. From there you can take the metro and go to Retiro Park, which is a beautifull place for a walk and relax. After the relaxation you can take the metro to Puerta del Sol and do some shopping. Madrid is a wounderfull city for it.

Day two

Starting at Puerta del Sol you can take .....St. to get to Plaza Mayor, this is a XVI century Square that evocated Spain as central colonial power. From there you can go walking to the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace is still use by the king of Spain, Juan Carlos I, as a receptionist palace for international events. One you have finish the visit to the palace you can take the metro to atocha square and visit the Reina Sofia Museum. The Reina Sofia Museum is a comteporary museum permanents exhibit of Picasso, Dali, Miro and other international painter. After that if you are still with curiosity for more paints you can visit the museum Thyssen-Bornemisza which is on the paseo del Prado, not very fare from Reina Sofia.

What else is left

On Sunday morning you may find great bargains at El Rastro, one of the biggest flea markets you are ever likely to see. Las Ventas is the most importan Bullring in the world, so if you are interested in see a bullfight this is the place. For those who like soccer Real Madrid at Santiago Bernadeu stadium and Atletico de Madrid at Vicente Calderon most Saturdays or Sundays. The epicenter of Madrid's nightlife is Plaza del Dos de Mayo, in the area known as Malasaña, but you can find bars and discoques all over the place. The Botanic Garden in the paseo del Prado is unique in Europe. The Almudana Cathedral is another place to stop.

Shopping

Shopping in Madrid is realy fun, since Spain is one of the cheapest countries in the EU, Madrid is the capital to shop. The Sol distrit is where you would fine easier and fun to do it. There is El Corte Ingles galleries where you can fin anything you want o need from a house to a nail, their section in clothing is famous, but not specially cheap. The Zara stores, which you can find in Preciados st. are cheap and have style clothing. In music, video, books and electronic Fnac, also in Preciados is the store to go. Thought for just music Madrid Rock in Gravia Ave. is a store where you can find anything to the best prices.
